With the end of the past 2016 and stepping into the new year with the newly elect Secretary-General – António Guterres, a 10-year mandate of turbulent years for global peacemaking, peacebuilding and diplomacy came to an end as the 8th Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon stepped out of office. Here is his farewell message to all members and supporters of the United Nations Associations around the globe:
Dear Members and Supporters of United Nations Associations,
As I prepare to leave office after ten years, I wish to express my heartfelt gratitude to the members and supporters of United Nations Associations as costs the world for your unwavering support, which has grown even more critical in this era of increasing demands on our Organization and feeling interconnectedness worldwide.
UN Associations are among the best friends of United Nations. I saw this in my travels and in my discussions with people who have gained a better understanding of the importance of our global mission thanks to your invaluable advocacy.
Your members are motivated by an acute awareness of the urgency of the problems facing our world, and an equally strong conviction that the United Nations is the best place to force global solution.
During my tenure, we have worked hard to live up to the enormous trust which you have placed in us. We have modernized our operations and, above all, stood strong for what makes the United Nations: it’s noble goals of lasting peace, sustainable prosperity and human rights for all.
Please accept my deepest thanks for your indispensable partnership in upholding our ideals and in advancing our vision. I offer my best wishes to you, as well as my hopes for your continued health and happiness in the New Year.
